ABOUT US - GRASSROOTS LEADERSHIP SINCE 1920

Our Mission and Goal

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

Our goal is to empower citizens to shape better communities worldwide.

Our Roles in the Community:

Since its founding, the League of Women Voters of Sarasota County has served two important roles in our community: Voter Service and Citizen Education, and Study and Action

Voter Service and Citizen Education:

We are committed to keeping the public informed so that they can be active and informed participants in government.

Through our Voter Service committee, we produce an award-winning Voters Guide, register people to vote, host candidate forums, and serve as poll workers.

To help support our voter service and civic education initiatives, the League of Women Voters of Sarasota County Education Fund was founded as a 501(c)(3) organization to which contributions are deductible for income, gift, and estate tax purposes.

Study and Action

We are also committed to improving our system of government and impacting public policy through advocacy.

Our committee members select issues for study and action at all three levels of government: national, state, and local. Once an issue is chosen, we determine the facts. Through study, research, and a process of consensus-building, a League position is reached.

We then take action and lobby to affect political change.

Our reputation for nonpartisanship and thorough study is the key to our credibility with government policy makers and our lobbying success.
